Men of 1800-1869

Witney Temperance Band (1850)

An 1859 ambrotype of a nude man, by George Prentice - we do not see many nudes framed so, mostly academic studies being used for artists’ reference and printed on paper for durability, or secret possessions tucked away for private pleasure and not set out on display!

Taken with rather more clarity than many of his photographs, this studio-set scene by F. Holland Day dates to approximately 1896. Beautifully arranged to illuminate the elegantly seated figure just so, and bring out the natural beauty of the naked form; the lighting in his indoor shots is close to perfection.
